CXC Simulations Coaching System
July 11, 2017

By creating a realistic racing experience with leading-edge visual, audio and motion control systems, our Motion Pro II has helped thousands of drivers to get seat time and improve their skills. Drivers are able to prepare for races accurately without incurring the cost of heading to the track – virtually able to have almost unlimited seat time. Now, the CXC Coaching System allows those drivers to take even better advantage of the Motion Pro II by implementing all the tools necessary for a driver coach to provide not only coaching, but live feedback.

The CXC Coaching System comes equipped with:

  • A dedicated coaching PC
  • Dual screens
  • Live Spectator System
  • Live Telemetry System
  • Live Eye-Tracking System
  • Two-way Communication System
  • Remote Control System for the Motion Pro II

While the benefits of driver coaching are well-known and documented, the CXC Coaching System offers several advantages to both the coach and the driver. Telemetry can be observed in real-time, instead of having to wait until the end of a session. The driver coach will be able to observe exactly what the driver is seeing and doing without the danger of riding in the right seat.

Pirelli World Challenge race-winner Michael Lewis, who currently races for K-Pax Racing in the no. 98 McLaren 650S GT3, has utilized the CXC Coaching System with numerous drivers. We asked him for his insights on the system.

“At its core, the CXC Coaching System uses the exact same process and data analysis program as professional racing teams – including the K-PAX Racing team that I race for in World Challenge, “said Lewis. “The data you look at on the screens, with all of the data trace lines, are exactly the same.”

“Spending time on the Motion Pro II with the CXC Coaching System is the same experience that one would have at the track. A driver can go through the exact same run plan on the simulator as they do in real life and review their data and a detailed on-board video via the eye-tracking glasses. We can then determine what part of their driving, or what part of the track, to focus on for the next session. It is important to spend adequate time away from driving to review the data to understand how you can improve.”

In addition to providing the same type of data to review as a race car on track would, the CXC Coaching System also provides numerous advantages for the coach. Normally, being able to directly observe the driver on track meant the coach needed to sit in the passenger seat. This not only puts the coach at risk, but the extra weight of the coach has a noticeable effect on the handling of the car.

“It is nice to be able to help someone while not being in the car with them,” said Lewis. “Although you could be working with a good driver, anything can happen and therefore if there is a way to coach without being in the right seat, I am all for it. Driving on track with a coach in the passenger seat does not provide the most accurate feel as the braking potential and cornering ability are reduced. Because of those drawbacks, using the CXC Coaching System and being able to work with a driver in the virtual environment is quite nice. The coach can look over the driver’s shoulder and observe their steering inputs, their line how they brake and accelerate and whether or not they get fatigued over a long session.”

The final piece of the puzzle, the eye-tracking software, enables Michael to hone in on the finer details of maximizing the time spent coaching his clients.

“Because the eye-tracking capabilities are an incredible tool to show exactly where and how much a driver is looking through a corner, we incorporate that into the data review to help the drivers get a better understanding of the techniques of looking through a corner,” said Lewis. “Depending on what the driver needs, the coach can use more of one tool than another to get the driver up to speed. The CXC Coaching System gives us a great set of tools to use.”
