Can a racecar be green? Possibly, now that there’s a new kid on the block in the world of racecars. Called the Delta Wing, it’s a revolutionary racing car with a dramatic shape designed to be more efficient. Chief designer Ben Bowlby envisioned a racecar designed to “halve the aerodynamic drag, halve the power, halve the mass, fuel consumption, tire consumption and still achieve the performance of our competitors.” In his words, for racing, “the future is about efficiency.”

Dan Gurney’s All American Racers took on the development of Bowlby’s design with efficiency at the forefront, which necessitated many hand-built parts to make sure this vehicle also met all official racing requirements. Featuring a 1.6 liter, 4-cylinder Nissan engine, the Delta Wing racing car has an ultra-tapered front end with just four-inch wide tires and flares out to a regulation racecar width back end.

CXC Simulations took part in the development process of this unique racecar: CXC built the Virtual Delta Wing Race Car – a racing simulator made to feel like the real Delta Wing – and created the virtual Le Mans track for the Delta Wing development team. CXC Simulations then also provided All American Racers with one full-motion racing simulator during the development of the Delta Wing. Working with CXC’s extremely realistic simulator is an efficient way to get the feel for the track before hitting the rubber on the pavement – which it did last month.  

Alex Gurney: “CXC went way out of their way to provide a fantastic simulator experience for all of us involved in the Delta Wing project. With a car so out of the mainstream, it was a huge help that the simulator gave us a feel for a lot of the ‘unknowns’ before we actually hit the track. I turned countless laps at the ‘virtual’ Le Mans, and if the sim didn’t have to go home, I would probably still be sitting in there turning laps, smiling all the way.”

Reminiscent of the Batmobile with its fin and cool carbon fiber exterior, the Delta Wing was launched on March 1, 2012 at Buttonwillow Raceway in California. Alex Gurney, the two-time Grand Am racing Champion, had the honor of taking the Delta Wing around its first curves on the racetrack. The track test proved – yes, it does turn!

On to big things, the Delta Wing is now handled by Highcroft Racing and will have its debut race at the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans on 16–17th June. As of now, two racecar drivers have been confirmed for Le Mans: Marino Franchitti and Nissan’s reigning FIA GT1 World Champion Michael Krumm. Due to previous racing commitments, Alex Gurney will not be able to take part at Le Mans. It has the 56th exhibition only spot, yet the Delta Wing’s performance is very relevant. To mark the official opening of their new Beverly Hills dealership, the McLaren Group threw a party on January 10, 2012. The highlight on McLaren’s showroom floor was the MP4-12C, their newest supercar. CEO Ron Dennis was the other star in McLaren’s new car dealership that night, which was buzzing with television celebrities like Jay Leno, Patrick Dempsey, Matt LeBlanc and other successful businessmen and well-dressed. Cool blue and purple lighting set the mood and go-go dancers and cirque du soleil-style acrobats showed McLaren pulled out all the stops. What more could you ask for?

For high-speed driving enthusiasts, there was one extra delight on the floor in the form of a professional car simulator. That’s why CXC Simulations seized the opportunity to be featured from February 9^th -11^th as an exhibitor on the Big Boys Toys “The Ultimate Playground” 2012 edition held Dubai, United Arab Emirates.  For those not yet familiar with the show, Big Boys Toys is a Middle East premier lifestyle show that features the latest, most powerful products and gives viewers a vicarious thrill with its interactive product demos.

This year’s edition of the show took place at the extravagant ATLANTIS the Palm in Dubai.  While Big Boys Toys 2011 (which also featured CXC’s Motion Pro II racing simulator) was a huge success with more than 27,500 visitors, 85 exhibitors and brand product showcases, the 2012 edition was the biggest yet with over 100 exhibitors and even more showroom space. Over 40,000 visitors came from the Middle East and all over the world this year giving our CXC Simulations’ Motion Pro II driving simulator lots of luxury toy-lovers to win over.

Big Boys Toys 2012 Show in Dubai Features CXC’s MP II Simulator is a post by CXC Racing Simulations

This year’s Detroit Auto Show featured an extra highlight for auto racing enthusiasts visiting the Cadillac booth. In addition to the more than 500 cars on the Detroit Auto Show floor, from January 14 – 22, thousands of lucky automotive fans were able to have an exciting racing experience on the special CXC-built Cadillac racing simulator.

CXC Simulations created a customized version of its production Motion Pro II racing simulator for Cadillac, outfitted with a custom-built motion system of commercial grade.  To give drivers an authentic Cadillac racing feel, CXC used a Recaro seat from the Cadillac CTSv-R to mimic its controls.  Cadillac then built a new body shrouding, cohesively adding the Cadillac styling to the Motion Pro II’s exceptional hardware.

The CXC Motion Pro II simulator developed exclusively for Cadillac’s racing program use began at the Detroit Auto Show last month, but will also be used for dealer events, its V-Series Performance Driving Lab (Cadillac’s preferred customer driving program), hospitality and marketing events. The pair of custom-built Motion Pro II simulators will travel the country with the Cadillac racecar, the CTSv-R.

Many local and international news agencies covered the CXC Cadillac racing simulator.  Autotrader.com’s feature on the Detroit Auto Show’s “Fun Activities” gave “the crown of racing simulator king” to Cadillac “for an incredible and immersive experience with the chance to get real coaching from actual racing school instructors.”  Cadillac reps described their simulators as being designed from the ground up to give a realistic racing experience – an absolute standard for CXC Simulations.

Detroit Auto Show features Cadillac Racing Simulator by CXC Simulations is a post by CXC Racing Simulations

On December 14th the premier racing simulator software company iRacing.com hosted its inaugural Pro Race of Champions Tournament – a virtual racing event for real world professional race drivers. The iRacing Tournament featured 27 top racecar drivers from F1, Indycar, Nascar, ALMS, Grand Am and other series from locations across the globe.

The green flag dropped not once but twice for a simulated race of 30 laps at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Oval and for second virtual race of 10 laps at Watkins Glen Road course. At stake was a more than $2000 in charity donations from iRacing that went primarily to the winner’s favorite charity ($1500) and to first two runners up as well ($500 and $250).

In theory, to take part in such a virtual race one would need only a PC, a steering wheel and pedals, as well as an Internet connection. As iRacing President Tony Gardner put it, “How cool is it to have big names from most of the top series racing each other . . . from the comfort of their living rooms around the world? It’s a testament to the incredible strides online racing has made in just the past couple of years.”

Of course getting the chance to sit in a high-end racing simulator makes it all the more fun and realistic– which is why the tournament gave us at CXC Simulations a thrill as well!

Competing in this exciting simulated racing challenge were two of CXC’s development drivers, Tommy Kendall and Matt Halliday. They competed in the race sitting in the CXC simulators located at the newly opened Sim Center at Santa Monica Airport called “SeatTime” (http://virtualseattime.com/). SeatTime features multiple CXC Simulators, where the public can rent them every day to either race or fly – CXC simulators are capable of both.

For Tommy Kendall, the experience in a serious simulation race was a first and he had lots of fun running in the middle of the pack. He placed 19th on the Oval and 16th at Watkins Glen.

V8 Supercar driver Matt Halliday came in strong at the front of the field, making it into the top ten of both races by finishing 10th at Charlotte and 5th at Watkins Glen.

Who sped to the finish line first? Former F1 and Nascar driver Scott Speed won the opening race in virtual Chevrolet Silverados while Australian V8 Supercar driver Shane van Gisbergen led in all ten laps in the second race in his simulated Mazda MX5 car. Yet Brandon Davis won the iPRoC simulated racing tournament overall, as his cumulative racing results put him on top. Davis gave his $1500 donation prize to his favorite charity, the Special Operations Warriors Foundation.

The simulated race was a big hit with its professional driver participants and with spectators; PSRTV broadcasted the event live at iRacing.com, where over 10,000 unique viewers watched. CXC Drivers Compete in iRacing Virtual Simulator Tournament is a post by CXC Racing Simulations

As a client of CXC Simulations, we have been keeping an eye on professional Indycar driver Townsend Bell, who participated in this year’s IZOD IndyCar Series Championship at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on October 16^th.

After placing 11^th at the Kentucky Indy 300 on October 3^rd, the California native looked forward to a stronger finish in his next racing event. Unfortunately, the IndyCar Championship served to highlight the immense dangers involved in professional auto racing.

Early in the Las Vegas race, Bell was caught up in a tragic 15-car wreck that resulted in the loss of star Indy racecar driver Dan Wheldon’s life. It was “certainly the most violent crash that I’ve been involved in,” Bell said in a Today Show interview after the accident.

No doubt that IndyCar racing is a very high-risk profession. Not always able to be on the track, to be as prepared as he can be on race day, Bell trains with the CXC Motion Pro II racing simulator. In an interview at CXC Simulations’ offices, Bell explained how the Motion Pro II racing simulator is realistic enough to help him train for IndyCar racing: “What this really helps me do is sharpen my physical approach to driving and my mental approach to driving.

“I found that when I drive this – especially this particular [CXC racing simulator], because I’ve tried lots of them and this is my favorite by far – when I’ve tried this and then gone to the racetrack the next day, or that week, I find myself so much more ready for the first 10 laps of the real thing.” Bell said that using a racing simulator “is a nice accelerant to getting ready,” getting his hands, forearms and feet alive – the perks of a professional motion simulator. “CXC makes such a great product in terms of tactile feedback,” Bell added.

The Herbalife sponsored athlete was recently featured in a video about his workout routine and, as CXC’s simulator is a part of his training, our Motion Pro II racing simulator also made the cut.

West Australian racing driver and CXC Simulations customer Steve Wyatt has won the inaugural Ferrari Challenge Asia Pacific Coppa Shell Championship.

Wyatt performed consistently well during the five rounds of the Ferrari Challenge racing series and secured his first motorsport title at the finals in Italy, with two race wins that weekend, November 5^th and 6^th.

“The trick to winning this title, given tracks and the rivals, is consistency and scoring points at every round, regardless of whether a particular track suits my driving style,” says Wyatt.  The Aussie racing driver noted that he had never before raced on the track in Italy previous to his winning performance.

As a CXC client, Wyatt shared his enthusiasm for our Motion Pro II driving simulator as an important part of his training program for the Ferrari auto racing series. His quote:

CXC Simulations has delivered a prototype of the new Luxury Mobile Training Unit (LMTU), a dedicated self-contained training simulator and comfort space on wheels built around the latest CXC Motion Pro II motor racing and flight simulator.

The prototype LMTU is based on a 18×8-foot “Toy Hauler” class trailer platform with dual spare tires and front and rear stabilizers.  It has been custom outfitted with a 5000W generator, air conditioning, a flat black interior, blacked-out windows and vents, black acoustical carpeting, a dry-erase board, hard mounts for the simulator and wired internet capabilities.
On top of all that, what makes for  a luxury racing and flight simulator experience?

Opposite the “business end” of the LMTU CXC simulator is a comfort area including a folding bed and table, a cooking area with stove, a refrigerator, counter and sink, custom wooden cabinets and storage areas, a closet, and a bathroom and shower area.  Provisions for communication, entertainment and satellite are built in.

The prototype LMTU professional simulator was special ordered by a client (who prefers to remain anonymous at this time) and will be used as a mobile personal training facility around the U.S. and abroad for the next year.
Subsequent CXC Luxury Mobile Training Units of various sizes will be custom configured to suit the user’s needs, whether as a serious driving simulator training module for racers and race teams, a mobile “man cave” entertainment center, or outfitted with multiple simulators for military programs, law enforcement agencies and vendors.

In partnership with Aston Martin, one of the most prestigious marques in the world of automobiles, CXC simulations will take part in exclusive events during the 2011 Monterey Auto Week.

From Thursday, August 18 through Saturday, August 20, the latest Motion Pro II Simulator will be featured at invitation-only events and receptions given at the Aston Martin Private Estate, where guests will be able to “drive” both modern and classic Aston Martin racecars on our CXC simulator and compare lap times with professional drivers on hand.  The occasion will mark the North American debut of the sensational Aston Martin V12 Zagato, a modern interpretation of the famous Aston Martin and Zagato collaboration, which has produced some of the most beautiful and sought-after cars in the world.  Also on display will be the world famous Aston Martin One-77 – the ultimate Aston Martin car so few will own, that yet fortunately the CXC simulator gives us a chance to “drive”!

CXC Simulations will also make news with the worldwide debut of a revolutionary new add-on for Motion Pro II Racing Simulators: the Combat Flight Pack.  Just a year after introducing two prototype, purpose-built flight simulators at the 2010 AirVenture Air Show at Oshkosh, CXC will demonstrate another simulation industry first: a production add-on package that transforms the Motion Pro II racing simulator into a fully-functional flight simulator – in less than two minutes!

Busy professional Porsche factory driver Patrick Long has been trying to find time to test a CXC Motion Pro II racing simulator for more than a year. Recently in Los Angeles for a Porsche presentation to the Motor Press Guild, the versatile two-time Le Mans GT2 winner and ALMS GT2 champion had the opportunity to slip away to CXC Simulations for a couple of hours and try out our racing simulator, “driving” several of the different types of cars he races all over the world.  His opinion?

“Easily the best simulator I’ve been on to date.  It’s just more realistic.  There’s less exaggerated motion, motion sickness, if you will, Disneyland type stuff going on.  You’re feeling a lot more of the energy you get when you’re driving a car.  The steering, whether you’re driving an Indy car, a stock car, whatever, relates more than other sims that I’ve been on.”

One of America’s great driving talents, Long won in his first appearance at Le Mans and set the GT2 lap record there.  In 2010, he co-drove the Porsche GTR Hybrid to its first victory and has scored wins racing at Sebring, Daytona and Zhuhai, China.  Successful in Formula 1 racecars, GT cars, stock cars, and ALMS cars and Grand-Am prototypes, Long enjoys all kinds of auto racing.  And the professional racecar driver made it clear that he wants to spend more time in a CXC Motion Pro II simulator.

Porsche Factory Pro Driver Patrick Long Tests the Motion Pro II Racing Simulator is a post by CXC Racing Simulations

Horacio Pagani, auto executive and famed designer of the Zonda and new Huayra supercars, visited a client recently and was invited to drive his racing simulator. The driving simulator was not the current Motion Pro II Racing Simulator, but rather an earlier, pre-production CXC prototype.

How did he like racing his own car on a CXC simulator?
